Gideon Odoom, IT specialist
People who have moved to Germany and whose first language is not German often find it difficult to secure a good apprenticeship here. Here at hsp, we do not see diversity as an obstacle, but as an asset and an opportunity. We are therefore delighted that Gideon Odoom is completing his apprenticeship with us. We spoke to him about his apprenticeship and his work here.
The interview: in words and writing
Today we’re interviewing Gideon. First of all, we’re delighted that you’ve taken the time to do this interview.
I'd be delighted.
What exactly do you do here at hsp, or what does your training involve?
I am currently doing an apprenticeship as an IT specialist, specialising in system integration, at hsp Handels-Software Partner GmbH. My duties include helping customers who are having difficulty using our software or who have questions about it. We do this either by email or over the phone, as well as via TeamViewer. In the worst-case scenario, we also visit customers on site to assess the problem and try to resolve it.
How did you come across the HSP?
To be honest, it was a long time ago. I did some research on Indeed myself, and my careers adviser helped me secure the apprenticeship by sending the letter and so on.
So, a sort of agency, then?
Yes, a placement.
How are you getting on? How are things going with your team?
So far, I’m really enjoying it, especially the lunch break. I go for lunch with my colleagues, as well as colleagues from other departments, and that’s exactly what makes me feel like I’m part of the team. And not only that, but my varied tasks also help me to improve my language skills. Talking on the phone helps me improve my spoken language skills, whilst writing emails helps me improve my written language skills. I really like that.
Just a quick word about your background. You do have a migrant background, don’t you? What made you decide to come to Germany?
That’s a good question. I’m from Ghana. I came to Germany because my parents live here. On the one hand, I wanted to live with my family; on the other, I wanted to learn a trade so that I could further my education.
What are your plans for the future? What would you like to get started on next?
Plans for the future are very important. I intend to complete my training successfully. That is my current plan for the future.
That is certainly a very important goal. I’d like to thank you once again very much for taking the time to be here, and I’m, of course, still delighted that we were able to have you here today.
