Sustainability at hsp

Our corporate colour sets the standard.

Others are welcome to chat. We prefer to take action.

Anyone who wants to be successful in the future should ensure that there is a future.

Apparently, there are still companies that view sustainability and profitability as separate issues. For us, however, the two go hand in hand.

On the one hand, many parents work here and we are thinking about our children’s future. And on the other hand, there will be no economy on an uninhabitable planet – we can guarantee that.

Small and large-scale measures for sustainability

Talk is silver, action is gold

Local drinking water protection

Rather than simply transferring money to some organisation or other, we prefer to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in ourselves. Ideally, right here in our own neighbourhood in Hamburg.

Sustainability Team

It all started with the team. At hsp, sustainability is not an unwelcome task that is foisted upon different people just before the end of the working day, but rather a fixed part of the workload of a sustainability manager appointed by the team and a six-member task force, which bears primary responsibility for it.

In a group chat with the sustainability team, green ideas are generated, opportunities for improvement are discussed, targets are set, progress is measured and successes are celebrated.

We believe that we can achieve more by working together as a team, and that the cause benefits enormously from the different perspectives of each member.

Energy-saving options

Desktop PC users may only notice them later, whereas laptop users spot them straight away: Energy-saving options. However, it is not only the desire for the longest possible battery life that makes this function indispensable; from an environmental perspective, too, an optimal setting certainly makes sense.

What’s worse than ‘stand-by’? ‘Stand-ready’!

The built-in standby mode on modern electronic devices has rightly fallen into disrepute, as it causes the electricity meter to tick over slowly but steadily, even though nobody is actively using the devices. However, the real energy guzzler is the ‘stand-ready’ mode of devices which – despite the user’s inactivity – do not even switch to standby mode, but continue to run at full power. In an office setting, this naturally applies first and foremost to team members’ work computers.

In May 2021, hsp launched an awareness campaign on this topic, which significantly reduced the number of office computers entering standby mode, thereby cutting energy costs and helping the environment. By skilfully fine-tuning the optimal settings, we managed to reduce the average time it took for office computers to switch to energy-saving mode by a substantial 68%. The before-and-after comparison is even more positive when it comes to screen time-outs: without disrupting staff’s workflow, we were able to reduce the time it took for monitors to dim automatically by a massive 85%.

This shows that even small and simple steps can help to make a contribution to environmental and climate protection.

Greening the office

Office and houseplants not only improve well-being but also help reduce the carbon footprint. Through photosynthesis, green plants convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen, amongst other things.

The rule here is: the more plants, the greater the oxygen output. That’s why, in May 2021, we launched a full-scale plant drive and welcomed no fewer than 13 new, green colleagues: Amelie, Lucas, Mojo, Bowie, Paulchen, Mojo, Pleun, Alfredo, Karl, Bertie and Eileen have been helping us to become even greener and to create a pleasant office environment ever since. As part of our office refurbishment in June 2023, we added another dozen plants.

And green plants are real miracle cures: as early as nearly 30 years ago, the NASA demonstrate in their „Clean Air Study“ that certain houseplants break down chemical pollutants and thus effectively improve indoor air quality. In offices in particular, electronic devices, furniture and floor coverings can release vapours – some of which are toxic, such as formaldehyde or ammonia – into the air we breathe. These undesirable gases can trigger headaches and difficulty concentrating, and therefore make us ill and unproductive.

Another advantage of houseplants is that they act as natural humidifiers. In fact, more than 90 per cent of the water used for watering is released back into the air, which is very pleasant both when the air is dry due to heating in winter and when temperatures are high in summer.

Houseplants are therefore not just a treat for the eyes, but also act as humidifiers, air purifiers and oxygen generators all in one – making them the perfect boost for both people and the indoor climate.

Going paperless

Since autumn 2019, we at hsp have been practising a complete move away from paper for both outgoing and incoming documents. This means we consistently leave the printer switched off, and our suppliers have also switched to paperless communication and learnt that we no longer accept paper. This measure not only fits in perfectly with our commitment to digitalisation, but also saves a great deal of resources and reduces CO₂ emissions significantly.

In the three years leading up to the initiative, our office emitted approximately 381.3 kg of CO-equivalent air pollutants emitted as a result of the electricity consumption involved in printing processes, paper production and the manufacture of printing consumables (ink, toner, printers). These production costs also resulted in 2,264 litres of waste water, which requires extensive treatment.

By going paperless, hsp can therefore avoid the following environmental costs each year:

  • 25.77 kg of CO-equivalent air pollutants
  • 5.83 kg CO because the paper was not printed on
  • 95.5 kg CO due to the energy not being consumed in the production of the propellant
  • 754.67 litres of waste water that would require extensive treatment
Green electricity

hsp Handels-Software-Partner GmbH sources all its electricity from renewable energy sources. As an electricity supplier, we A ray of hope chosen. The Hamburg-based utility supplies all its customers with 100 % green electricity, whether they are private individuals, SMEs or large companies.

In Germany, renewable energies are among the most important sources of electricity. Expanding their use strengthens our country as a business location and reduces our dependence on totalitarian regimes that supply oil and gas. As early as 2020, there was an increase in according to the BMWi the share of renewable energy in Germany’s gross electricity consumption rose to 45.4 %. This meant that, for the first time, renewable energy sources generated more electricity in total than all fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) combined.

Reducing plastic use

One of the greatest challenges of our time is the enormous amount of plastic waste. To do our bit to help reduce it, we have switched all our purchasing to products packaged with as little plastic as possible.

When selecting drinks for our visitors, we therefore avoid plastic bottles and lids entirely. In addition, we have installed a state-of-the-art water filter and dispenser, which provides fresh drinking water around the clock without any plastic waste.

In some areas, however, we cannot avoid using plastic packaging. Whilst we are constantly looking for plastic-free alternatives in these areas, we ensure that any plastic waste produced is channelled into the recycling cycle.

Drinking water protection

We take the idea of working with our own hands to help the environment – and getting them a bit dirty in the process – quite literally. That’s why we take part in environmental initiatives such as the Tree-planting campaign by Klimapatenschaft GmbH.

The aim was to plant 555 trees to create a mixed woodland. These 555 trees sequester 6.9 tonnes of CO2 per year, resulting in over 500 tonnes of CO₂ in the long term2 are sequestered. However, trees are not only key factors in the fight against hydrocarbons; they are also excellent allies in the protection and regeneration of drinking water. The tree-planting campaign was therefore primarily an environmental protection project aimed at replenishing and purifying groundwater through the afforestation of valuable mixed forests.

By taking part in the 2021 tree-planting campaign, we have offset our water footprint and are now officially recognised as a groundwater-neutral company. Even better: we were back at Klövensteen Forest in 2022 and are planning to plant trees again in 2023.

Eco-friendly cleaning products

Conventional cleaning products are harmful to the environment. According to the report, household detergents and cleaning products alone account for Federal Environment Agency More than 500,000 tonnes of chemicals are discharged into wastewater every year, including many surfactants, polycarboxylates, phosphonates, enzymes and silicones.

The proportion of components that are not easily degradable is steadily increasing, and many of the ingredients are suspected of to cause asthma, cancer or other illnesses.

This is reason enough for hsp to take action on this front as well. That is why we use only environmentally friendly and more readily biodegradable organic cleaning products when cleaning our premises.

Coffee hsp
Fair Trade Organic Coffee

Coffee is not only the most popular hot drink in offices, but also, at 164 litres a year, throughout Germany as well. Unfortunately, the market share of coffee produced in an environmentally friendly manner and for which fair remuneration is paid in the single-digit range.

Even though we at hsp Plastic packaging (such as coffee capsules), it was therefore very important to us that the coffee beans we source are not only packaged in an environmentally friendly way, but also bear the EU organic logo and the Fairtrade mark.

No sooner said than done. Since March 2022, we have therefore been sourcing via our NEMO’s Coffee Shop We exclusively use coffee grown under certified organic farming practices, which do not involve the use of synthetic chemical pesticides or fertilisers. Furthermore, 100% of our beans are grown and traded by Fairtrade producers, so you can enjoy every sip with a clear conscience.

Waste management

Even in the most sustainable companies, waste is almost impossible to avoid. However, all staff can do their bit to minimise the impact on the environment.

It goes without saying that we sort paper, packaging waste and other types of waste for disposal. However, with soiled packaging and complex composite materials, it’s all too easy for items to be sorted into the wrong bin. That’s why a campaign has been launched to raise awareness amongst all staff about which types of waste need to be disposed of in which way.

Bee sponsorship

Bee colonies are organisms that form a productive symbiotic relationship with the natural environment around them. They are unimaginably complex and irreplaceable. Despite their importance, humans are ruthlessly destroying their habitats and the very foundations of their existence.

These hard-working insects are of considerable importance to the Earth’s ecological balance. The extinction of bees would have dramatic consequences for the entire ecosystem and, consequently, for us humans too. This is because many plant species rely on pollination by bees. The plants, in turn, provide a basis for the survival of countless animal species. There is a risk of a domino effect, the consequences of which we can scarcely imagine.

The widespread media coverage of this issue in recent years has led to a sharp rise in the number of new beekeepers and bee colonies in Germany. These projects are usually funded through the sale of bee products such as honey, beeswax and propolis. In addition, many beekeepers offer sponsorship schemes for private individuals and businesses. Through a sponsorship, a business funds the upkeep of one or more bee colonies. This includes the cost of materials, inspections, Varroa mite control, maintenance and other tasks.

However, not every beekeeping project is a good idea. If hives are placed near wild bee colonies, such projects can actually be harmful. It is therefore vitally important to research the subject thoroughly before getting involved. We made a conscious decision to sponsor two bee colonies on a fruit-tree meadow in our neighbourhood. Our ‘flying field staff’ are looked after by our beekeeper Sylvia Linn, founder and owner of the label Hamburg Honey Factory.

Electric mobility

Whilst some people would still prefer to travel around by horse-drawn carriage, we have chosen to look to the future. We have therefore gradually converted our entire fleet to electric vehicles and have been driving entirely on electric power since 2024.

In addition, four of our underground car park spaces are fitted with wall boxes. Using DKV charging cards, our vehicles are charged entirely with green electricity. This means we no longer have to make any compromises, even when we’re away from the office.

DKV Green Electricity Certificate 2026
Green servers

Both our domains and the Opti.Tax Cloud are hosted by our long-standing partner, InternetX, which has been committed to green, sustainable business practices since 2019.

In her „Green Economy“–Hub informs InternetX about the numerous measures it is taking to generate green computing power:

  • Energy is generated on the roof of the data centre for 1,777 hours of sunshine a year.
  • The thermal air currents on the roof of the data centre are used to cool the equipment.
  • Any additional energy requirements are met entirely by hydroelectric power.
  • Thanks to cold aisle containment, the volume of air requiring cooling is reduced.
  • Thanks to the triple-height ceiling, the waste heat rises upwards without affecting the equipment.
  • Use of Dell EMC servers with a long service life.

Thanks to these measures, InternetX has reduced its CO₂ emissions by over 18 million kilograms since the start of 20192 can be saved. A superb achievement and an exemplary demonstration of how to host in an environmentally friendly way.

CARBON-NEUTRAL H₂O

Of course, we still love sparkling water, but as part of our sustainability efforts, we introduced drinking water dispensers in June 2023. These are intended to serve as a carbon-neutral alternative to conventional water crates.

Why this change? Germany has some of the highest-quality drinking water in the world. We are therefore now offering still water straight from the tap or via a special filtration system at our drinking water dispenser. In addition, our staff can choose between lightly carbonated and heavily carbonated water, available both chilled and at room temperature.

This measure contributes to our sustainability strategy, in particular to reducing our CO-footprint. Whilst the production of bottled mineral water is generally CO-neutral, but significant CO₂ emissions are generated-emissions during transport from the source to the wholesaler, from the wholesaler to the retailer and, finally, from the retailer to the office. By switching to drinking water dispensers, we minimise these transport costs and thus contribute to climate protection.

Smart LED lighting

As part of the office refurbishment in 2023 carried out by the Agentur ’78 GmbH We have completely overhauled our lighting concept and opted for LED lighting. Every office is now equipped with smart LED floor lamps that react to movement in the room and switch on and off automatically. In addition, the lamps measure ambient light and automatically adjust the light output to the optimum brightness for fatigue-free working.

LED lighting is therefore a key component of our sustainability strategy: it reduces our company’s energy consumption and plays a significant role in creating a more pleasant working environment. Another advantage of LED lighting is its long service life and energy efficiency compared with conventional incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes. This not only saves us energy costs but also reduces CO-emissions. We hardly ever use ceiling lights any more, as they usually consume an unnecessary amount of electricity and cannot be dimmed or brightened individually.

Further measures: Why we keep going

Why does society keep talking about „Climate“protection’? It is not the climate that needs protecting, but people. It is we who are under threat. Because the fact is: If we carry on like this, we won’t survive, no matter how rich, privileged or well-motorised we are. So let’s talk about Peopleprotection.

Accordingly, it is absurd and out of touch with reality to destroy the environment for the sake of the so-called „economy“. There will be no economy on a planet that is hostile to life. As a Hamburg-based high-tech company committed to innovation, we hold ourselves to the standard of structuring our business in such a way that we can continue to operate successfully tomorrow. This also means ensuring we do not become extinct.

That is why we are not resting on our laurels with the measures we have already implemented. We are always on the lookout for further ways to increase our contribution to protecting the environment and people.
