Meet our lecturer, Viktor Rebant. Viktor leads the course on Internal Control Systems at the hsp Academy.
My name is Viktor Rebant. I live in the lovely Südstadt district of Hanover, near Lake Maschsee. And I was born in 1993.
What is your professional background?
I successfully completed my A-levels in 2012, but didn’t want to go straight to university; I’d rather start an apprenticeship. Simply because I wanted to earn some money. And I just wanted to get away from all the theory for a bit. I then decided to train as a tax clerk, which I’m absolutely delighted about, because I think it’s a brilliant course and you learn a great deal. I completed the course successfully and then worked in a tax consultancy. I dealt with annual accounts, payroll and bookkeeping – the usual stuff. After six months, I decided to study part-time whilst working and chose to study tax law – the Bachelor of Law. Then one thing led to another. During my apprenticeship, I’d always been involved in the interface between IT and tax law, though the focus was more on the technical implementation. In 2018, I joined Treuhand Hannover. It’s a tax consultancy firm operating throughout Germany. We now have around 33 offices and around 1,000 employees. I joined the tax department there and then focused more on the legal aspects at the interface between IT and tax law. That’s when topics such as GoBD, procedural documentation and internal control systems came to the fore, and, as I said, I’ve been advising on internal control systems, amongst other things, since 2018. Since last year, I’ve also been studying IT management part-time, because I’m keen to do so and it fits in quite well with my area of expertise.
What made you want to get involved as a lecturer on this course?
I’ve always been drawn to teaching. I can’t really say exactly why. Many people have said, „Tax law is such a dry subject“, but I’ve never seen it that way. So I simply chose a fascinating topic that is genuinely dry – even within our own professional circles – and tried to present it in a practical and engaging way.
What can participants expect from your course? What makes it stand out?
In my course, participants will learn everything there is to know about the internal control system. What is it? Where does it come from? What are the components of an internal control system? We’ll also look briefly at the theory of risk. After all, it’s only by understanding what risk is that I can put measures in place to mitigate it. And I’ve consistently tried to illustrate this with practical examples, so that it’s easier to understand and doesn’t feel too dry. What makes my course so special is that it covers a topic which not many others in the tax consultancy sector have yet addressed, but where I see a great deal of potential and also significant demand in practice. And so I’m simply delighted to provide further training in this area, to broaden people’s horizons and to show that tax consultancy isn’t just about bookkeeping and annual accounts, but that there can be much, much more to it than that.
